Avi Schönfeld is an internationally renowned pianist, composer and teacher. He was born in Poland, where he gave his first concerts, and then studied in Israel with Ilona Vincze, a former disciple of Bartók. Having won several national and international competitions (including the Leo Kestenberg prize and one with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra), Schönfeld made his début with the Israeli Radio and Television Orchestra before embarking on a concert career that was to take him round the world, embracing also his gifts as composer and teacher. At the invitation of the French government, he undertook further studies on the piano with Vlado Perlemuter, Yvonne Lefébure, Arthur Rubinstein and Marcel Ciampi, as well as with Nadia Boulanger and Alexandre Tansman in composition. Schönfeld is a professor emeritus of the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels and the Maastricht Conservatorium (Hogeschool Zuyd). Many musicians all over the world send him commissions for compositions, and he has written works for various national and international competitions as: Concours de l‘Ecole Normale Superieure de Musique de Paris, Concours Internationale de Saint-Nom-La-Breteche, Concorso Pianistico Internazionale Roma (‘special Prize Avi Schönfeld‘), Concours Europeén de Musique Picardie, Concours de l‘Institut National Europeén Besançon etc.
In addition to his work as artistic director and founder of EPRIM (European Institute of Pianistic Research Maastricht), he is also artistic adviser to the Anglo Dutch Piano Platform and has been a music critic of the Piano Journal London (‘92-‘96) and other music publications.
